Ubiquiti UMR-Industrial: New mobile router for extreme conditions

At the end of 2022, Ubiquiti launched the first device in its new series of UniFi Mobility - UniFi Mobile Router (UMR). The main goal of this device was to provide a stable Wi-Fi connection to mobile internet in company vehicles and trucks, while allowing precise tracking of the device's location. The router supports LTE Cat.4, which provides download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50 Mbps. UniFi's solutions were created as an alternative to standard infrastructures and have caused a big stir in the conservative IT sector. Thanks to advanced software and well-thought-out design, Ubiquiti' s systems have opened up new possibilities for users and administrators, taking comfort and efficiency to a whole new level.

For years, the company Ubiquiti has been working on a monitoring system, but encountered a problem with the versatility of its system. One of the challenges was to create a wireless and local network in places where this is not possible. With the introduction of the Mobile Router Industrial, Ubiquiti has solved several problems at once. With LTE technology, the Mobile Router Industrial makes it possible to create a local and wireless network away from the main office.

The UMR-Industrial is a compact and rugged LTE Cat.4 mobile Wi-Fi router, designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The device is ideal for a variety of IoT applications.

UMR-Industrial Characteristics:

  • VPN and VPN routing: The UMR-Industrial supports VPN connections between branch offices, providing a secure connection between remote sites and the central office.
  • Two Gigabit Ethernet ports with PoE support: One of the ports provides power to the connected device, making this router ideal for remote IP cameras.
  • Various power options: Support for PoE, USB Type-C and a 4-pin DC connector allows the router to be used in a variety of environments, including vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Built-in GPS: This feature provides accurate tracking of the device's location, which is especially important for monitoring mobile sites.
  • IP66 protection: The waterproof housing allows the UMR-Industrial to be used outdoors in the harshest conditions.
And what does Ubiquiti monitoring have to do with it? Well, the UMR-Industrial has 2 GbE RJ45 ports with PoE input and output (max. 10W), allowing you to connect a camera from your surveillance system in places where you can't run a local network. Of course, this is just one of the many uses of this device.

The UMR-Industrial features IP66 protection, which allows it to be used outdoors. This is another solution that allows you to create a wireless network, for example, in the parking lot next to the office or in other places, without having to run long cables.

Management and configuration of the router is done by directly connecting to it via patchcord. However, Ubiquiti, like some other manufacturers such as Teltonika, has developed its own remote management system for the device - the UniFi Mobility Manager. Note, however, that remote device management is possible after purchasing a subscription from Ubiquiti (the subscription cost as of August 2024 is €2 per month or €19 per year per device).

The UMR-Industrial device has a built-in GPS and a 4-pin DC connector with a voltage range of 9V to 30V, which allows it to be used in cars and trucks, as well as construction machinery and public transportation, significantly increasing its diversity of applications.

Summary

The Mobile Router Industrial (UMR-Industrial) extends the Mobile Router Series by adding tools that were previously only available in fixed industrial-grade routers. Now a reliable network for rapid deployment is available anywhere, whether on a construction site, vehicle or temporary location with the following features:

  • Zero-Touch Provisioning automatic configuration;
  • VPN between branch offices;
  • routing of the entire network via a VPN client.

UMR-Industrial is an excellent device for a variety of applications. Although there are similar devices on the market, with quality like Ubiquiti - only a few.
