Smart Home WiFi system from Totolink
Totolink in 2018 presented many new products, including a new mesh solution called Totolink T10.
T10 is available in a set (3 units) as well as in a standalone version - i.e. one unit that performs the functions of a typical Access Point.
We will focus on the set of 3 devices, as we are interested in the Mesh topology and its performance.
Of course, and this time the engineers from Totolink made sure that the device was very functional, meeting the expectations of the most demanding customers.
What's important: Totolink T10 supports the 802.11ac MU-MIMO wave2 standard and is able to provide up to 300Mbps (2.4Ghz) + 876Mbps (5Ghz) throughput wirelessly and, thanks to the 1GHz processor, has a very efficient transfer of data over Wi-Fi networks.
The most interesting topic is the wireless roaming function, which allows us to move between the different network nodes, maintaining an efficient connection to our Wi-Fi network at all times.
Totolink T10 has also been equipped with beamforming, which means that the router focuses the Wi-Fi signal towards devices (tablets, smartphones, laptops, etc.) currently using the wireless network.
T10 has been equipped with two Gigabit LAN ports, a Gigabit WAN port and a large selection of operating modes, the most interesting of which is "Mesh Mode".
Additionally, a very nice button has been placed on the front of the case, which allows you to quickly and easily create a smart Mesh network - just hold it down for a few seconds and the devices will automatically connect.
As you can see, Totolink T10 looks very promising, but only performance tests will confirm that the device deserves the recognition of customers.
Of course, for performance testing, we've built a small network to help us test the capabilities of routers running in "Mesh Mode".
Bandwidth measurements will be checked using the Mikrotik Bandwidth Test mechanism.
Additionally we will use the computing power of the novelties from MikroTik named hEX S (RB760iGS), which has a dual-core processor (MT7621A) with 880MHz frequency, 256MB RAM and gigabit ports.
Tests were performed in such a way as to check the capabilities of both individual nodes (satellites) in the smart mesh network and the whole structure. Therefore, our network has been rebuilt several times, which can be seen in the following diagrams:
The whole system testing process, contrary to appearances, turned out to be quite a difficult task. This fact is only due to the fact that at the moment it is not possible to check to which specific unit a particular client is connected. This will probably change with the next software update.
Before starting performance testing, we need to understand how Smart Mesh network works. Well, all Access Points of our smart mesh network work on the same 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz channels and, of course, emit the same SSID for each frequency, and the client unit connects to the node with the best signal.
With the Wifi Analyzer tool we can see exactly what a smart mesh network built with 3 devices looks like.
Let's go to performance tests ...
Satellite stations are away from the main unit by about 15 meters (Satellite #1) and 30 meters (Satellite #2). Additionally Satellite #2 is located behind the partition wall to make the connection a little more complicated. In this way we will check the performance in conditions comparable to home conditions (e.g. another room). Of course, all tests are based on TCP protocol.
In accordance with Diagram 1, we have obtained the following connection results for the individual devices:
Bandwidths over 200mbit/s and over 20,000 packets per second! This is a very good result for equipment of this class and it is enough to use the Internet at a high level (HD video, online games, etc.)
The next stage of our tests will be to check the performance of the furthest node of our network - Diagram 2, Satellite #2 - over 30m + wall. The test procedure is analogous, and the results obtained below are the same.
More than 80Mbit allows for seamless Internet use even with HD streaming. Unfortunately, traffic is very "jagged", but let's remember that in this case Satellite #2 was located in very demanding conditions.
The performance of the individual elements of a smart mesh network Total T10 is best illustrated by the graph:
The results are very satisfactory! Both Satellite #1 and #2 show high performance. As I mentioned earlier, more than 200mbit/sec and even 80mbit/sec enables you to use the Internet service in a very good quality, without any problems!
And the best! The smart mesh system from Totololine allows you to connect any number of satellites - we are not limited only to 3 pieces, but we can connect many more. Everything of course depends on our needs...
Generally, the Totolink T10 is an excellent solution for all those who have difficulty accessing the wireless network throughout their apartment or house.
Also very simple network configuration smart mesh speaks in his favor, because every, even less advanced user is able to configure the Wi-Fi network very quickly.
In summary: Totolink T10 and its Smart Mesh is enough to provide Internet access anywhere in our home!
