QoS stands for Quality of Service.
Using routers without the QoS function can be cumbersome, e.g. it will lead to a situation where one person downloads huge files at full speed for a long time and thus uses the whole link. The other user will have trouble browsing the web or watching video. A router with QoS detects what is important and what is less and gives higher priority.
It is used to connect different computer networks (different, i.e. of different classes, masks, etc.), so it acts as a communication node.
